Abstract

Food packaging has a significant impact on the safety of the packaged food. The aim of this study was to familiarize with the consumers' opinion on the safety of food packaging. The research part of this work was a questionnaire survey in which 204 respondents participated. Most of them were not convinced of safety of packaging intended to come into contact with food. In their opinion, the best packaging material was glass; however, the type of packaging rarely determined the choice of a food product. It can be assumed that convenience, functionality or attractiveness of the packaging are still more important for consumers than safety and ecology. All respondents recognized the important role of packaging in ensuring food safety. Half of them indicated the use of non-food contact substances in packaging material production as the most common current risk. This may indicate the respondents' lack of knowledge about solutions (regulations) aimed at ensuring consumer safety in Poland and EU.(original abstract)
