Abstract

Nominal and ordinal scales are used to measure the attitudes and preferences of consumers to measure qualitative features. The most commonly used test to check whether there is a relationship between the analyzed nominal variables is the test independence χ2 developed in 1900 by Karl Pearson. It serves to verify the null hypothesis (H0) - that the two examined variables are independent. The purpose of the work is to familiarize the reader with the principles of using the test independence χ2 in a transparent and practical way. On the examples of selected data from the survey conducted in February-April 2020 on a group of 210 tourists using gastronomic services in Wrocław, the use of the χ2 test to examine the interdependence of nominal variables was presented. Examples of the use of the test independence χ2 are presented in a simplified approach, using the chi.test function available in Microsoft Excel 2010, as well as in theoretical terms - verification of hypotheses based on critical values.(original abstract)
