Abstract

In 1976, Erich Fromm wrote "For the first time in history, the existence of the human race depends on a radical change of the human heart."
Why? A concise answer can be found in the text of the Earth Charter. “The prevailing patterns of production and consumption are causing environmental devastation, resource depletion and massive species extinctions. It is destroying our community. The benefits of economic development are not shared fairly and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Injustice, poverty, ignorance and violent conflict are widespread and cause great suffering. Unprecedented human population growth has overwhelmed ecological and social systems. The foundations of global security are at risk. These trends are dangerous, but they are not inevitable.”
